Pantothenic Acid is also called Vitamin B5 and is vital to all forms of life. It is found in living cells as a coenzyme A (COA), which is vital to numerous chemical reactions. CoA and its acyl derivatives are needed for reactions that generate energy from food. The synthesis of essential fats, cholesterol and steroid hormones requires CoA, beta-oxidation of long chain fatty acids, and the synthesis of neurotrans- mitter “Acetycholine” and the hormone “Melatonin” which control the wake/sleep cycle. Metabolism of a number of drugs and toxins by the liver requires CoA. COA plays an essential role in acetylation reaction, in which addition of acetyl group (-COCH3) by CoA is carried out. Protein acetylation affects the 3-dimensional structure of protein, potential peptide hormones, gene expression, cell division and cell signalling.
